Grenada, Mississippi is a small town located in Addison County, Mississippi. The population was 1,924 at the 2010 census. Grenada is the only municipality in Addison County and it is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Grenada were Native Americans who lived there for many years before white settlers arrived. The first Englishman to settle in Grenada was Captain John Smith who built a trading post there in 1737. British traders continued to visit Grenada until the mid-19th century when they abandoned it due to its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico and lack of available land. In 1836, Ulysses S Grant moved his family from Illinois to Mississippi and purchased land near present-day Grenada. He established Grantsville as a plantation house and home for his extended family including his wife Julia and their five children: Solon, Lycoming, Albert (1839-1912), James Prentice (1841-1925), Seward (1843-1920) and Margaret Cushman Grant (1846-1945). In 1850s Grantsville became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as fugitive slaves were able to escape from plantations in nearby Alabama and Georgia. In 1861 during Confederate capture of Mobile Bay, Grantsville served as headquarters for Union forces attacking Fort Sumter. When Union troops withdrew from Mobile Bay after surrendering that city, Grantsville remained unoccupied and quickly reverted back to African American ownership under Reconstruction government rule which lasted until 1877 when all black property owners were forcibly integration into white society through redemption sales programs administered by county agents or “redemption societies” with state sanctioned violence against black residents if resistance continued. White residents slowly began moving out of Grantsville during this time period; however most African Americans remained behind while white citizens relocated away for various reasons such as crop failures or political instability caused by changes taking place in Jackson County surrounding them such as increasing cotton production from new fields developed north of town along Highway 82 where cotton prices had reached record levels since the Civil War ended three years earlier due largely to investment by Yankees following Andrew Johnson’s election as president in 1868 which increased production opportunities for slaveowners across America followed by high demand for labor during Reconstruction periods throughout America resulting largely from lower wages being offered than those prevailing prior to 1865 among other factors contributing especially towards increased crime rates given access now unrestricted transportation resources available across state lines thanks also to Interstate 20 formed just over 10 years earlier following reconstruction efforts initiated in event antecedent I-20 would have facilitated easier movement throughout entire Plains region making it possible more easily accessible overall trade goods smugglers facilitating drug runs etc.) By 1930 Census count resident population still consisted primarily of African Americans with few villages or other settlements existing within any radius greater than one mile radius having total acreage consisting predominantly low lying swampy areas intermingling with several examples having some level development including one large community consisting mostly farmstead dwellings scattered around several miles wide open area composed mainly forested areas although some residences had been erected near churches/schools) However beginning about 1930 census date particularly decrease occurred among male nonresidential population living primarily off agriculture/agricultural products local merchants becoming more numerous retailers generally dealing chiefly in agricultural items prominent example being two small general storettes interconnected through narrow street leading directly into primary school building these two stores later become known collectively simply as "the Two Merchants". A number of accomplishments associated with early vicinity include establishment by grantees/owner(s) of public park located east side Main Street between Second Street dead end & Third Street circa 1900; initial paving & planting thereof done by grantee/owner(s) utilizing donated materials sourced mostly locally; donation made possible thru purchase tax exemption granted clubhouse operated jointly by Binghamton Post Office Department & Trustees Of Park District #2 adjoining main shopping center featuring ice cream parlor open 7 days per week serving refreshments light weight sodas soft drinks milk pails eggs etc.; golf course opened approximately 1920 adjoining main shopping center developments commenced circa 1925 including erection & dedication OF church - First Baptist Church now Godfrey Chapel named after Reverend Dr J G Godfrey owner(s) active 1935 thru 1945 employed FULL TIME BY POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT managing all aspectsrict activities facility consisting 5 acres bordered on 3 sidesby Post Office Building yards containing office buildings 2 stories high single story attached garage providing additional parking capacity limited handicapped access via lift accessed via vestibule entering building interior via side entrance facing Main Street
