Grenada, Mississippi is located in the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Alabama to the south, Mississippi to the north, and Louisiana to the east. The population of Grenada was 5,609 as of the 2010 census. Grenada is a small unincorporated community on State Highway 9 near Biloxi. It had a population of 254 in 2000. The area that would later become Grenada was first settled by African Americans who came from Georgia in the early 1800s. They worked as sharecroppers on plantations until about 1853 when they formed a community called Prentiss Landing with other black families from Mobile Bayou region. The town began to grow rapidly after 1854 when boats started arriving daily with goods destined for New Orleans! The white traders soon became interested in this new market and started selling goods such as cotton, sugar cane, indigo dye, and other agricultural products. In 1865 local white men organized a militia to protect their property against slave-holders trying to purchase slaves from these freedmen. This event marks one of the earliest examples of white resistance to black EEOC rights activism in southwestern Mississippi! After Union victory at Gettysburg in 1863, many Northerners left for Reconstruction South (including some who had moved there during the war). Many African Americans decided they wanted nothing to do with southern racism or Jim Crow segregation laws which were still prevalent despite Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier! Many migrated westward into what would become Arkansas Territory following passage of that territory’s bill declaring all black people citizens! This decision surprised many because western Arkansas was already home to several thousand freedmen living among them under Freedmen’s Bureau auspices known as “Little Arkansas”! These blacks were eventually absorbed into general statewide black populations throughout much of Mississippi during Reconstruction – an experience not typically faced by newly emancipated whites! In November 1870 Hurricane Andrew slammed into Haiti; much damage occurred along Jamaica's coast due to tidal waves caused by Irma which followed closely behind Andrew days later !!! It should be noted that Haitian refugees numbering over 100000 fled their homes immediately before landfall.......some estimates put this number even higher.........the total cost associated with rescue/ rehabilitation efforts exceed $10 billion dollars !!! Needless to say...much reconstruction effort ensued both ashore and afloat......many Haitians returned home but did not forget their homeland..........still going strong today !!

Grenada was a British colony in the Lesser Antilles. It became an American territory in 1821 and was named for Grenada, a small island off the coast of Trinidad. Mississippi was moved from Alabama to become part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and by 1818 it had reached its present size. The United States acquired it as part of the Treaty of Ghent in 1824. With its rich soil, natural resources, and strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico, Grenada quickly became one of America's most prosperous slave-holding colonies. Its white owners were primarily planters from South Carolina and Georgia; however, many black slaves worked on plantations. In 1800 there were only 1,500 blacks living in Grenada; by 1830 their number had grown to over 20,000. At first they enjoyed advantages such as high school education and freehold land; but after emancipation began in 1865 they lost all these rights and suffered significant economic decline. In 1898 Grenada voted against joining Cuba under Fidel Castro's leadership; this cost it military support during his campaign for president that year. In 1962–1963 intervention by US Marines led to a series of riots that left more than 100 dead and 500 wounded across the Caribbean country. Relations between Grenadians and Americans deteriorated further after US troops landed on sugar islands near St Vincent during Operation Mongoose to oust leftist rebels from control following a bloody civil war (1976–1982).
