Grenada, Mississippi (/ˈɡʃeɪnəd/; Spanish: Granada) is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Grenada" comes from Spanish and means "island." The island has been inhabited by people for over 3000 years. The first Europeans to visit the island were Portuguese sailors in 1524 who made landfall on what is now Grenada while searching for a passage to India. In 1803, French explorer Jacques Cartier named the island after his homeland of Grenoble (France). After France lost control of Saint Domingue (the Lesser Antilles), it acquired Grenada as part of its new Louisiana Purchase. In 1830, when Mississippi acquired much of eastern Louisiana following the Mexican–American War, it also gained Grenada as part of that acquisition. The town was founded in 1868 by Danish immigrants who had arrived in Mobile Bay during the American Civil War and found work on land grant programs run by US President Andrew Johnson. The men built homes and stores around a small naval airfield known as Point Saline which they used to supply their home country with food and munitions during the war effort. After World War II ended and Americans began streaming back into South Mississippi to rebuild post-war society, many Danes left their homes in Grenada to find new opportunities in America. By 1970 there were only a few hundred residents remaining on Grenada Island; however, due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure - including schools or health care - most people living on the island still relied heavily on boat navigation and own fishing trips for income.

Grenada, Mississippi has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The area was originally inhabited by the Mena (Creek) tribe of Native Americans. In 1821, Grenada was granted land by the United States government in what is now known as Jackson County. The town of Grenada began to grow rapidly after it became available for development and soon boasted a population of over 100 residents. By 1828, Grenada had become an important center for commerce and industry in Mississippi. The town continued to grow during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks in part to its location on the banks of the Yazoo River. This made Grenada an ideal place to establish businesses and provide commercial opportunities for those living in Mississippi. By 1851, grenadians had reached a total population of 2,500 people. The town grew even more during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to new transportation options available through railroads and boats that transported goods from neighboring states into Mississippi. During this time period, grenadians began developing their own culture and traditions. They started practicing Christianity within their communities and began built churches and other religious buildings within their townships. grenadians also developed a strong sense of community which helped them maintain their social fabric during tough times. In 1865, following America's Civil War, South Carolina took control of Louisiana Territory following its victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th that year. This left Mississippi with only two slave states - Alabama & Georgia - meaning that all black Mississippians were stateless until Reconstruction began in 1868 under President Abraham Lincoln). Consequently, all white Mississippians who lived within Confederate territory were required to flee or be stripped of their rights as citizens by order of General Robert E Lee; however, many grenadian men chose not to flee or face certain death because they felt they were integral part of their community nonetheless). Due to its close proximity to Confederate territory as well as its importance in southern cotton production (due largely to its strategic location along the Yazoo River), Grenada quickly became one of the most heavily populated areas within Confederate-controlled Mississippi during Reconstruction Period (1868-1877). During this time period, grenadians putatively adopted various forms of "Negro nationalism" which focused on unifying disparate black groups behind a common banner - including creating schools/universities specifically for blacks withingrenadian communities; supporting Black Republican political candidates; wearing abolitionist symbols such as buttons or tassels on clothing; exhibiting cultural artifacts associated with black Americanhood such as books about African slaves etc.;etc.). 2
On Grenada, Mississippi history begins with the arrival of white Americans in 1818. The first settler on the island was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived with his family from upstate New York. Over time, other American families also arrived and began to live on Grenada. In 1837, a group of Scots-Irish immigrants from County Antrim founded the Methodist Episcopal Church on the island. During the 1840s and 1850s, Grenada was an important stop for slave traders travelling between Africa and America. This industry stopped around 1860 due to increased competition from expanding cotton plantations in America. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces landed on Grenada and began skirmishing with Union troops. By 1870, most of the island had been captured by Union forces andBecame part of Mississippi Territory. After Reconstruction ended in 1876, many African Americans migrated to Grenada to work in sugar cane fields or as domestics. In 1915, Hurricane Hugo destroyed much of what remained of Grenada – leaving only a small number of people living on the island today.
