Grenada, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Hinds County. The population was 4,362 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Hinds County by population and has only 1,000 residents when combined with neighboring unincorporated communities such as White Sands Beach and Gulfport. Grenada was founded by English colonists in 1795 as a trading post on the Yazoo River between Mobile Bay and St. Louis, Missouri Territory. The first permanent settler arrived in 1813, when Capt. Elijah Denton set up a log cabin on what is now State Street near present-day Meridian Street. In 1831, Grenada became part of Jackson County after that county was established from parts of Stark and Montgomery counties west of Jackson River (including present-day Greenwood). During this time, Grenada experienced significant economic development due to its location on the Yazoo River and its connection to both Mobile Bayou (now Delta) and Alabama Strait through which Navigation patrolled for shipping lanes during times of navigation trouble or blockade: cotton shipments from New Orleans via Mobile Bay passed through Grenada before reaching Europe; saltpeter shipped from Louisiana stopped at Grenada to be refined; rice exports passed through here en route to China; mail boats traveled downriver between these ports before being delivered by land carriers to Jackson County limits near Memphis

The town of Grenada was platted in 1874 and named for Grenada, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. In 1907, the post office at Grenada opened and continued to be used until 1959. The first school in Grenada was built in 1904. In 1958, the town of Gullah Island which is located on the southern coast of Mississippi was incorporated into Grenada as well.
