It is part of the Memphis–Stuttgart–Tullahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1821 and named for Grenada in West Indies. The first post office was established in 1825. Grenada had a population of 599 in 2000 and 1,711 as of 2010. The town has one high school (Grenada Senior High School) and one elementary school (Fenton Elementary). There are also two churches in Grenada: First Baptist Church and Methodist church. In 2002, Grenada received $2 million from the Walton Family Foundation to help improve educational opportunities for local students.

Grenada, Mississippi is a small town located in Gibson County, Mississippi. The population was 581 as of the 2010 census. The community is named after Grenada, a British colony in the Caribbean Sea. The first settler in Grenada was Jarvis Hogg, who arrived there in 1848. He and his family were the first white people to live there and they built a cabin on what is now known as Main Street. They also planted some crops and raised livestock. In 1852, Isaac Smith and his family came to Grenada from Tennessee. He had been sent by General Andrew Jackson to purchase land for an agricultural school in Gibson County. Smith's wife, Lucilla (), became the first female teacher in Mississippi. In 1862, when Confederate forces invaded Mississippi and burned Corinth (now Jackson), Smith offered to lead a group of Mississippians against the rebels if he could be given land in Grenada for his school project. Smith's request was granted and he founded the grenadadedale Agricultural School in 1863. The school became one of the most popular institutions in grenadadedale because it offered education for women as well as men; at that time only white women were allowed to teach public schools in Mississippi. In 1875, Jno Fenton bought 1/4 acre of land northeast of grenadadedale from Solomon Asbury for $300 ($ 14 per capita). This site would become home to Fenton's cotton gin which operated until it was destroyed by fire on October 7th, 1910 while Fenton was away on business trip to New Orleans! This event is still commemorated with a plaque located at this location that reads "Jno Fenton erected this granite tombstone To Remember That Which Was Lost." Fenton also donated $50000 towards reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Katrina which hit Grenada on August 29th 2005
