However, during the American Civil War (1861- 1865), Greenwood fell victim to Confederate forces' raids and pillaging. During the war, many of Greenwoods citizens were killed or captured by Confederate forces. As a result of this attack on Greenwood, its economy somewhat collapsed and it lost much of its political power within Mississippi society. After the war ended in 1865, Greenwood reverted back to being a frontier settlement until it gained recognition as an economic center during Reconstruction (1868- 1890). From 1890 through World War II (1914- 1945), Greenwood experienced significant growth due to cotton production but also faced challenges such as racism which inhibited black migration into the town until well into the 20th century. Finally since World War II has seen some redevelopment which has resulted in increased crime rates in downtown areas
