Greenwood is located in Butler County, Mississippi, just north of Jackson. The town was originally named English Settlement but changed its name to Greenwood in 1837 after General Andrew Jackson's victorious march through the area on his way to become president. The town was originally an agricultural community with few non-slave laborers because it was located on the edge of cotton plantations. As Greenwood became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, many fugitive slaves managed to reach safety in the community. local blacksmiths also helped hide fugitives from capture or execution by white mobs during Reconstruction. In 1865, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest advanced into Union territory along the Tennessee border and besieged Greenwood; however, Union troops arrived before he could take any captives or damage property. After Forrest's departure, Greenwood slowly regained its former prosperity as a farming community until World War II when it lost most of its industry to bombardments and then desolation following Hurricane Katrina. The Greenwood community has made some progress since Katrina struck: In 2006 they erected a memorial honoring all who perished as a result of Katrina while also creating new businesses such as restaurant and grocery store which have reopened since then; their efforts are gradually restoring much of what had been destroyed by Katrina
