In 1849, two cannons were purchased by Greenwood from Union soldiers during the American Civil War in order to provide emergency cover against Confederate attacks. Greenwood, Mississippi was a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John Greenwood and his wife, Susannah. Greenwood had a population of about 150 people at the time it was established. The Greenwood family lived there until their death in 1906.
The first store in Greenwood opened on December 1, 1881. In 1886, the white citizens of Greenwood organized themselves into a society known as the Citizens' Protective Association to keep black people from voting or working on their farms because they did not have citizenship rights. The group also tried to get local government officials to take away land from black farmers for development purposes.
In 1896, Greenwood became part of the newly formed Jackson County and its residents received citizenship rights. A year later, the blacksmith shop and grocery store were built in downtown Greenwood by businessman James Dooley.
Greenwood experienced some tough times during World War I but persevered because its citizens knew that they were needed to support the war effort. After the war ended, many of the businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from other towns within Jackson County that had been granted city status. However, when new federal legislation allowed for blacks to be employed in certain sectors of business—such as banking and transportation—the businesses reopened quickly unto new customers and employees who were drawn thereto by opportunity rather than racism or discrimination.
