Greenwood, Mississippi is a town located in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is the county seat of Hinds County. The name Greenwood comes from the Choctaw word for "happy" or "peaceful." The original settlers in Greenwood were white men who came to live near the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers in order to trade goods with the Native Americans. When these men died or left for other parts of America, their families took up residence in what is now Greenwood. The first black residents of Greenwood started arriving in the early 1800s. They were brought over by freedmen who had been liberated from slavery in Alabama and Georgia. Many of these black people worked as sharecroppers on land owned by white landowners. However, starting around 1868, when Reconstruction began after Reconstruction policies were implemented following the Civil War, many black people decided to move to Greenwood because it was an open-air market town where they could buy goods and services that they couldn't get elsewhere. The community has experienced several Rough Times during its history including a time when it was hardest hit by violence associated with the cotton fields that dot its landscape today. However, overall, Greenwood has defied predictions that it would become an economically devastated inner city due to gentrification or changes within its racially mixed community (i.e., Hispanics vs African Americans). In fact, according to a report done by Booz Allen Hamilton LLP LLP in 2018 called "Inperceptions: race and opportunity among Black America's Top Companies", Greenwood has one of the lowest rates of income inequality among all American communities studied – ranking ninth out of 100 neighborhoods across 11 industries surveyed! Many members of both races continue to work together symbiotically - oftenentimes referred to as "the Moors". This cooperative spirit has helped keep most aspects of life affordable and accessible while also supporting vibrant local businesses which have kept jobs open even during tough times past and present - including some that are owned and operated by descendants of those original white migrants who founded this town back in 1868!

Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in Harrison County, Mississippi. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. Greenwood is one of the few remaining towns in Harrison County which experienced significant African American settlement during the late 1800s and early 20th century. Greenwood was originally settled by freed slaves who were brought over from Alabama. By 1884, Greenwood had a black majority population of 25%. In 1915, Greenwood's white residents rioted after they believed their black mayor did not share in same rights as townspeople. The riots left twenty-one people dead and seventy-six injuries. The violence motivated Mayor Averill Harrell to create an ordinance stating that all citizens are equal before the law. After this event, Greenwood became known as a bastion of peaceful integration and began to enjoy increased economic stability and political power throughout the 1940s and 1950s. However, during the 1960s and 1970s Greenwood experienced high levels of crime and social unrest; this contributed to its decline beginning in the early 1990s. However, recent efforts by local officials have led to positive changes for Greenwood including new businesses opening up shop within the community, more successful fundraising events such as "The Grovefest" celebration which attracts tens of thousands of attendees each year, and an increase in tourism which has helped keep the economy afloat since 2006. Although some challenges remain such as disparities among races still exists today (some residents self-identify as African American while others identify with Caucasian heritage), overall redevelopment efforts are putting Greenberg back on track with plans for updated public facilities (such as a library) that will help promote racial diversity within its community while also creating jobs for local residents.
