As a result of this order most Mississippians had only spears or knives as their main source of defense against small animals like deer or rabbit. In Greenwood specifically many men decided they needed guns to protect themselves from these attackers should they attempt to flee town instead of fight back effectively. On January 1st 1863 Union troops began invading northeast Mississippi led by Major General Ulysses S Grant after successful campaigns in Arkansas and Missouri combined with reports of large slave uprisings taking place throughout the state (mostly in Yazoo City). The Union troops quickly discovered that few citizens remained loyal to slavery (just over 20% according to historian John Leland) so little resistance was offered when they approached Greenwoodtown which lay just outside of Union territory at about 12 miles north latitude on I-55 near present day Starkville - well within enemy lines! The decision was made by Union forces based on information received from scouts that several thousand Confederates were located inside of town while others were scattered around rural areas surrounding it ready to resist anyattackers! Upon entering town Union soldiers found only eight men armed and four women who immediately fled into homes rather than fight back! Even though most residents had abandoned their arms most men decided it would be useful enough time later when opportunity presented itself too take advantage of amnesty provisions offered through Johnson's Compromise Plan which ended Reconstruction following the American Civil War

In recent years, Greenwood has seen an increase in development and population growth, which has led to some challenges and controversies. The first mention of Greenwood is from 1796 when French traders noted its location on the Anacostia River. The town was founded by General Andrew Jackson in 1802 as part of his campaign against Native Americans. By 1811, Greenwood had a school and two churches. A year later, Jackson ordered all Indian towns east of Memphis to surrender their cannons or be burned down. One of Greenwood's earliest residents was John Crouch who served as mayor from 1830-1834 and 1840-1842. In 1832, General James Kenedy moved his military camp to what is now known as Meridian Avenue in response to the Creek War (1829-1830). He also built some homes in what is now northeast corner of Meridian Avenue and First Street North within what is now Greenwood Cemetery/Jackson Park area today (the portion annexed by Meridian Park.). 3 years later on October 15th, 1835 Gouverneur Morris reported "a very large body of Indians" were camping on the banks of the Anacostia River at present day Washington Square West just north of downtown Griffin Heights neighborhood northwest side Road #1 off I-565 exit 157b southbound near US 69 exit #4). At this time there were only about 50 households living near where Fort Moultrie now stands located about 3 miles due east along I-565 between Griffin Heights Blvd & Interstate 65 exit 137a southbound.) Greenwood had no permanent buildings other than tents or huts erected for defense purposes meantime orders came from Stroudsburg Tennessee ordering all settlers west bank not to come any closer so they could build stores etc... A militia company under Captain Troup arrived soon afterwards with orders "...to suppress these savages". On December 22nd Jno Fenton writing for The Mississippian newspaper wrote "A detachment composed chiefly of Illinois Volunteers despatched Thursday night upon an expedition against more than three hundred Creeks who had made themselves pests among us since our retreat from Pensacola." They encountered "no difficulty" apprehending most of them but one man managed to escape after wounding two soldiers before fleeing into Seminole County northeast corner current day Bridgeport Drive & Old Hammond Rd.. However this adventure did nothing to dent Jackson's opinion that Creek nation should be treated with respect!
