Over time, many black families returned to live in Greenwood while others moved out of state altogether due to discrimination throughout Mississippi governmental structure and economic status quo. Today, Greenwood continues to be an important community within Mississippi's culture and economy . In 1828, Greenwood became a town and the first post office was established there. In 1836, Greenwood became a county seat and its first jail was constructed. It also became the first courthouse in Mississippi. From 1840 to 1865, Greenwood served as the capital of Mississippi.
