The population declined from its peak of 2,811 in 1990 to 1,628 at the 2010 census. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Greenwood around 1800. They were farmers who grew corn and cotton on their properties. When the American Civil War began, many people from Greenwood fought for Confederate forces. Some residents even went so far as to burn Union flags on their homes and businesses during the war. Despite this action, some people still considered themselves supporters of the Union side because they felt that slavery was wrong and that they should be treated equally under law. After the war ended, many families followed new opportunities which opened up in America and decided to move away from agriculture into towns or cities where there were more opportunity for them to make money. In 1836, Hunsdon Village (now known as Greenwood) was incorporated as a village under the name "Hunsdon". The name change came about because at that time there were few villages in Mississippi with such an illustrious name as Huntsdon- meaning "homespun" or "made by hand". At first only men could vote; however, women soon joined the community too after they began enjoying better rights than men at this point in society. In 1856, Hunsdon became a borough due to increased business growth within its borders thanks to railroads coming through town along Interstate 20 which connected Memphis and Jackson . The population again peaked at 2,811 in 1990 but declined slowly over the next several decades until reaching 1,628 at census enumeration data taken 2001-2010
