Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Mississippi. It was founded in 1828 and it has served as the county seat since 1855. Greenwood is known for its rich history, which can be traced back to when it was first settled. The town was originally named “Hogsett” after Colonel John Hogsett, who donated land to the town. The name changed to Greenwood because of the trees that grew in the area. The first settlers in Greenwood were those who arrived in 1828. They were primarily farmers and their families. Most of these people came from Virginia and Maryland. One of the early pioneers, James Banks, helped start the cotton gin in Greenwood and he also donated land to the town. The first courthouse was built in 1830 and it served as both county seat and court house until1855 when it was moved to Jackson County. The most notable business that closed down however was a restaurant called “Pine Gap” which closed down in 1996 due to financial difficulties. Lee set off for Richmond to surrender his army, Greenwood residents gathered at the square to watch as he crossed the bridge over the Mobile River. They5 were so proud of their hometown that they kept it separate from Union territory until 1863 when Union forces burned down all of what is now downtown Greenwood. The town gradually lost its importance after Reconstruction began but it has since regained some of its former prominence as an agricultural center and tourist destination.

On April 10, 1880, Waddle married Sarah Aiken at Muskogee Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Muscogee County
