Greenwood, Mississippi is home to one of the most well-known gun targets in the United States. The 1875 Confederate Monument is a popular target for shooters from across the country. The statue was first placed on the site in 1865. It was garrisoned by Confederate troops until shortly before their surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Afterward, many of these troops were rounded up and interned at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Some of these men, including General James K. Polk, were eventually released and allowed to return home with their families. Since its placement on the monument, Greenwood has seen many changesover time. In 1945, when missiles began being dropped on Japan from US bombers stationed in Guam, citizens took to the streets to demand that the Memorial be moved closer to town so that people could better view it from afar! The city government eventually agreed and replaced the original statue with a more recent model in 1967!

It hugs the eastern bank of the Yazoo River opposite Jackson proper and is bordered by Terre Haute to the north, Memphis to the east, Delta Junction to the south and Olive Branch upstream from where it joins Prairie du Chien Bayou
Greenwood was founded in 1824 by the Greenwood family. The first white settler in the area, Isaac Greenwood, arrived in 1825. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of around seventy settlers. In 1830, Greenwood was incorporated as a city. By 1840, it had more than one thousand residents. The influx of new settlers and the rise in prices for land led to tensions between the local black community and the white community. A civil war erupted in 1861, and Greenwood was sacked by Confederate forces. Although some residents fled to Canada or other parts of the United States, most of the town's defenders remained to fight against the Confederacy. In 1865, after Union troops captured Memphis and restored slavery, Greenwood reverted back to Confederates under orders from their commander-in-chief Jefferson Davis. By 1870, however, only a few hundred people remained in town; its economy had collapsed due to wide-scale freedman migration into surrounding counties.
