The first courthouse in Greenwood was built in 1815 and served until 1886 when a new courthouse was erected and served until 1907. The first post office in Greenwood opened on July 6, 1837, serving as thetown's only facility until May 20th of that year when a second post office opened (later renamed) "Pine Bluff". On November 15th 1840, Greenwood became a city through an act of Congress approved by President James K. Polk and signed into law by Vice President Millard Fillmore. That same year saw growth in business due to cotton growing operations located within what would later become known as downtown Greenwood During World War II, Greenwood played host to various military activities including airfields used for fighter bomber training; tanks being assembled at Hammond Army Airfield; chemical warfare testing conducted at Nichols Chemical Plant; steel production taking place at Greer Steel Company; and uranium enrichment experiments conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory . As part of efforts spearheaded by General George Patton during Operation Torch in 1942-1943 – which aimed to secure strategic objectives throughout North Africa – many businesses within downtown Greenwood were destroyed or damaged during Allied bombing raids carried out from December 1942 through February 1943 . In total over 1,500 local businesses were either destroyed or damaged during these raids .
