The first settlers to Greenwood arrived in the late 1820s and began to settle the area around what is now downtown Greenwood. By 1830, Greenwood had a population of around 10 people. The town's first school was built in 1837 and served grades one through five until it closed in 1865 due to financial problems. In 1892, Greenwood had a population of just over 100 people. For most of its history, it was an agricultural community with some livestock grazing and hoeing operations conducted nearby. However, starting in the mid-19th century, changes were beginning to take place throughout central Mississippi as cotton prices rose and mechanization became more prevalent. This trend caused many small farmers to abandon their holdings and move into larger cities or towns such as Jackson or Meridian for economic opportunities. As transportation improved during the 19th century, Greenwood began to experience increased traffic congestion within its boundaries from travelers who traveled northwards along State Highway 25 towardsJackson or southwards towards Vicksburg via Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now I-55). As result, development at Woodward Avenue resumed in earnest after 1840 when new streetcar lines were established between Jackson and Meridian Springsand Hammondsboro across Greenwold Creek (now US Hwy 54). These new developments led to an increase in business activity at Woodward Avenue which prospered until World War II when war production diverted resources away from Greenwood for other areas within Mississippi During World War II, Greenwood experienced significant growth as both military personnel stationed there (mainly during Naval Base Stonington) and civilians working at various munitions plants constructed close by developed industrial zones adjacent to Woodward Avenue which remain today known as "Wooten Park" & "Garland Heights". Although much effort has been made since then to restore some aspect of local history including restoration efforts undertaken at Heritage Village near Riverbend Road & Interstate 55 approximately two miles west of downtown Greenwood - much remains lost due primarily to neglect over time
Greenwood, Mississippi was founded in 1815 by the Choctaw people. The town was named for Greenwood Plantation on the Yazoo River, which had been acquired by General Andrew Jackson from the Creek people. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of 1,500. In 1837, Greenwood became an incorporated city and its trustees were elected at large. It continued to grow until it reached its peak population of 5,000 in 1860. By 1870, Greenwood was completely destroyed by fire and its remaining residents fled to other towns in Mississippi or Georgia.
