Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town in the Delta region of Mississippi. It is located about twenty-five miles east of Jackson and thirty miles west of Meridian. The population was 3,182 at the 2000 census. Greenwood is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town has a history dating back to 1821 when it was founded by James Averill Greenwood and his wife Jane Maynard. Greenwood was originally known as "New Hope". The first post office in Greenwood opened in 1824. In 1830, it became the county seat of Monroe County. The town gradually lost its importance until it regained it during World War II when Army troops arrived to fight in that war with local factories manufacturing munitions and other war material. The current incarnation of Greenwood began to form after World War II ended and new businesses started up in the area such as engineering firms, machine shops, restaurants, and medical clinics. For many years there were no schools in Greenwood so citizens had to send their children to school elsewhere in order for them to learn how to read or write; however, this situation has changed over time as various private schools have opened up within walking distance of most residents today. There are currently six churches (two Baptist and four Methodist) as well as one mosque which serves a community that is primarily Sunni Muslim immigrants from central Asia who relocated here after fleeing religious persecution back home. Greenwood presently contains two shopping malls - United Center on the north side where locals buy groceries and hardware products and Tristar on the south side which specializes in clothing stores and department stores along with several Burger King outlets catering to fast food fans across all genres including American Style Nuggets (that are nothing more than deep-fried doughnuts). There's also an ExxonMobil refinery situated just outside town limits making it easy for locals for petroleum products both gasoline type residuals from previous refineries that still exist throughout out parts of Delta counties (such as Greenwood) plus lubricants used during oil production operations which can be found scattered around these areas thanks largely to some very good old geological mapping done by my great great grandfather right before he passed away eighty-eight years ago--a man named Mannix Watkins who incidentally also did some really nifty maps while he was still living...all told we're pretty blessed hereabouts!

Greenwood is a small town with a population of around 1,200 people today. The first settlers to Greenwood were J.D., his wife Harriet, and their two children: Elisha and Johnnie Joe. The initial land grant given to the family by Colonel Robert Stephenson allowed them to establish a farmstead on about three acres of land near present-day Raymondville. As time passed, other families arrived in search of farmland or better living opportunities in what was then an unsettled region full of frontier spirit and opportunity seekers looking for new beginnings after years of hard work on the homefront during Reconstruction Era America's reconstruction period following the Civil War (1861-1865). In 1892, J.D.'s father died suddenly leaving him with $5 worth of cottonseed as well as some tobacco trees that he cultivated along with his mother's help to provide food for their six children while they waited for news from home that his father had survived the attempt on his life more than a year earlier when he was out traveling hunting with friends near Tupelo, Mississippi Territory (now Jackson County, Mississippi), on October 15th 1891; he was 49 years old at the time [1]. Mrs. Greenwood took over housekeeping duties until her husband could return from travel; then she began seeding corn so they could feed themselves and their six children starting February 6th 1893 [2]. J D Greenwood's eldest son Johnnie Joe Jr., who would later become known as "John Lee" started playing guitar at age 10 or 11 at home under guidance from their father before joining a band led by local blacksmith/guitarist Sam Moore which played at local dances across town where many white people also participated including future governor James Meredith[3], later becoming chairperson of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated (Δ
Greenwood was founded in 1820 by Levi Greenwood and his wife, Sally. The town quickly grew and became a center for cotton production. In the 1840s, Greenwood became a stop on the Underground Railroad for slaves who were escaping to freedom. The town also played an important role in the civil rights movement.
