However, by 1865 Greenwood had shrunk to just 10 residents due to difficulties with World War II shortages of food and housing. In 1950, Greenwood unsuccessfully petitioned for recognition as a city under Mississippi law; however, it has continued to be Recognized as an incorporated village since then. The community is also home to a large military installation - Fort Gibson Army Base - which has been used by both the US military and local police departments since World War II.
