Greenwood is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Jackson–Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Greenwood were men named John and James who came overland from Tennessee in 1819. They started a gristmill on the Mississippian River and soon after began to trade with Native Americans for goods such as corn, beans, cotton, and buffalo robes. In 1830 they started a sawmill which became one of the largest in the area. The first post office was established in Greenwood on October 25, 1830 by Coleridge Greenough with Wm Fenton as his clerk. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the river between Jackson and Toledo across from Native American territory claimed by both nations. By 1840 there were over 100 residents living in Greenwood proper; however, it would not reach its present size until after 1850 when railroads arrived and hastened growth. The early twentieth century was a time of great change for Greenwood as statehood approached and new immigrants arrived seeking work opportunities. On December 5th, 1907, Greenwood's first school opened under the name "Pioneer Schools." That same year also marked the start of heavy logging activity adjacent to town limits which caused extensive damage to homes and businesses along with some loss of life; but eventually cleanup operations occurred that left much of downtown park still intact today. In 1954 local voters passed an ordinance establishing civil rights guidelines for black Mississippians living within city limits; this event helped spur political activism among blacks throughout Mississippi during that era. After years of struggle against discriminatory practices by local officials and business owners alike, Greenwood finally achieved township status on November 3rd1968 recognizing all individuals regardless of race or color while preserving many historic landmarks including its original courthouse complex built between 1829-1830).
