The community continued to be a minor outpost of Jackson County until it consolidated with other towns in Jackson County in 1881. The town's importance declined after the planting of cotton began to take precedence over manufacturing in Greenwood throughout the mid-19th century. However, some remnants of Greenwood remain today as a small farming community with few permanent residents. The town has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The town suffered from fires in 1861 and 1863, but it recovered quickly thereafter. In 1865, Greenwood became part of Mississippi Territory when it was organized as a state.
