Greenwood, Mississippi is a small town located in the Yazoo Delta region of Mississippi. The Greenwood community was founded in 1852 and named for General James A. Greenwood, who commanded the Department of the Gulf during the American Revolution. The people of Greenwood were farmers and hunters until after World War II when they began to shift their focus towards industry. In 1945, three men from Greenwood became owners of a binocular company that had been started by two other businessmen in nearby Meridian. By 1951, one of these men had become president of what would become Bushnell Instruments, Incorporated (BII). BII manufactured telescopes and binoculars under license from numerous companies including Deere & Company and Northrop Grumman Corporation. Over time, BII became one of the largest binocular manufacturers in the world with annual sales totaling $2 billion by 1997. When President George H.W. Bush announced his plan to cut federal spending in 1995, many Binocular Manufacturers took heart as this signaled an opportunity for them to sell surplus products at slashed prices to help make ends meet. However, when Congress passed the 1996 Consolidated Appropriations Act funding short by $1 billion, BII was unable to meet its financial obligations even though it had ordered 2 million new products that year alone! In March 1997 BII filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to mounting debt and insolvency; however reorganization efforts have since failed and BII remains defunct today despite being once one of America's most successful businesses

In 1920, when nearby Meridian became an independent city, Greenwood became part of Meridian Township together with other townships including Canton and Holly Springs. In 1951 it reverted back to Meridian Township status but remained within Jackson City limits until 1970 when it merged intoJackson-Meridian Combined Statistical Area under Mayor James Korda's plan which created Greater Jackson area which included all of Haleyville within its boundaries
