The town grew rapidly after it became one of several areas along the Gulf Coast designated for cotton production by President James Buchanan in his Second Inauguration Address on January 20, 1865. By 1870, Greenwood had 4 banks and 100 inhabitants. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Greenwood became an important center for black political influence both before and after Reconstruction which ended with passage of the Ku Klux Klan Act in 1865. In 1903, while still under white rule control, Greenwood had two schools – onepublic elementary school and one high school – followed by three churches: First Baptist Church (drawn from Eastern Christianity), Methodist Episcopal Church (Directly descended from Methodists who fled religious persecution in America during Reconstruction), and African American Baptist Churches Incorporated (ABI). However when federal troops arrived to suppress Black Nationalist violence throughout south Mississippi following Franklin D Roosevelt's election as president on November 8th 1912 they burned most all but 3 businesses within sight of what would become known as "The Green Mile". This event served as a catalyst for many local businesses to switch from white ownership to black ownership beginning immediately afterwards; this process continued until 1966 when all but eight local businesses were owned by black proprietors or managers majority Black households including seven churches currently have active pastors/congregations serving their congregations today making Greenwood one of the most diverse towns within any municipality outside NYC limits!

The town is home to two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1865) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1907). There are also a few schools including Saint Elizabeth School (1905), Indian Head High School (opened in 1951), and Woodward Middle/High School (opened in 1971). Greenwood has been known for its annual Agricultural Show which takes place at the nearby Agricultural fairgrounds beginning on Saturday night early into Sunday morning preceding the week long citywide event that begins on Monday morning featuring local foodethnicity demonstrations as well as agricultural exhibits by various manufacturers throughout downtown Greenwood throughout that weekend
Greenwood was founded in 1868 by John Greenwood and his wife Rachel. The town was named after Greenwood's mother, who died young. Greenwood became a small community with about fifty residents when it was established. In 1927, the town had a population of one hundred people. By the late 1990s, Greenwood had declined to its current size of forty-six people and six businesses.
