In 1895, Greenville became one of five towns in Hinds County created through an act passed by the state legislature during Reconstruction following America's Civil War. At its incorporation, Greenville had a populationof 10 citizens; it would grow to 24 by 1920 and 48 by 1930 before declining rapidly until reaching its current size (9,715 residents at 2010 census). During World War II, many businesses in town were used to produce munitions for military use; however most have since closed or changed hands and few remain extant today outside of souvenir shops or museum displays about old times in town (eighth generation descendants often visit these sites on family vacations).
