Greenville is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 894 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County and home to the University of Mississippi. The name "Greenville" comes from English colonists who named it for a green meadow near their settlement in 1684. The original location was much closer to Mobile, Alabama; however, due to its strategic position on the navigation corridor between Mobile Bay and Gulfport, Greenville became one of America's most important port cities during both its slave and post-slave eras. In 1814, after General Andrew Jackson defeated Dearborn at Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Tennessee, he ordered General John Fayette to burn down Fort Moultrie (later renamed Fort Jackson) in Mobile so that all African Americans within 10 miles (16 km) would be free. Fayette did as Jackson asked and proceeded to destroy all but two buildings inside the fortifications; however, this action attracted attention from British forces commanded by Rear Admiral John Brown who bombarded and destroyed Fayette's unit while they were executing their prisoners nearby on 7 November 1814. This event is known as Brown's Insurrection or First Indian War of Georgia & Alabama (1814–1815). The burning of Fort Moultrie effectively ended slavery in Mobile County for good. From its earliest days as an American outpost on Mobile Bay – long before any European settlers arrived – Greenville had been an important center for cotton trade with England and other parts of Africa via riverboats across the Gulf Stream powered by steamboats carrying cargoes worth up to $10 million per year at its peak in 1830 alone. Cotton exports expanded rapidly following improvements made to shipping routes during this period including construction of canals connecting New Orleans with points along the lower Mississippi River Valley which made transport more efficient than ever before allowing goods such as cotton to reach marketplaces throughout North America at low cost without being subject to Magellan's March 5 expedition whose goal was establish a Spanish route through Central America that would open up new markets for Spain’s sugar industry

One notable resident during this time was Drayton Coleman (1858-1943), an American physician who helped develop modern methods for diagnosing tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases during the First World War and introduced effective treatment methods into many countries including Nazi Germany
The town of Greenville, Mississippi was founded in 1819 by General John C. Floyd. The town was named for General Floyd’s father, who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. Greenville began to grow rapidly after it was founded, and by 1830 it had a population of twenty-one people. In 1836, Greenville became an official seat of government for Mississippi Territory, and by 1840 it had become a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The town continued to grow rapidly until 1871, when it officially merged with neighboring city of Tupelo to form one large municipality. The merger led to increased traffic and congestion on Route 66, which caused many problems for the town. However, the town still managed to maintain its nickname of “The Town That Took On Cotton” because of its role in helping support the cotton industry.
