Atherton's location near downtown made him popular among black residents who wanted goods available closer to home rather than having to drive into Jackson or Meridian every time they needed something special. He also became involved in politics and was one of the founders of the Republican Party in Greenville. Atherton's store grew rapidly into a major player in local commerce and politics; he served as mayor (1922–24), clerk-treasurer (1925–28), justice of peace (1929–31), 2ndDistrict commissioner (1932–34), 3rd District commissioner (1935–37), chairman (1945)wanternational convention delegate from East Tennessee delegation . He died in 1961 after long years of health problems caused by hypertension and heart disease brought on by poverty and racism
