Greenville is a city in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Quitman County. The name "Greenville" comes from English settlers who named it after Greene Plantation in Virginia. The first white settler in Greenville was John White, who arrived in 1819 and built a cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1831, he founded what would become known as White's Landing on Long Island Sound. At that time, Greenville had a population of around 100 people and was primarily an agricultural community; hunting and fishing were its main sources of income. However, by 1840, cotton Magnolia production became so important to the town that it decided to move its headquarters from White's Landing to nearby Corinth (now Jackson) for business reasons only – Greenville did not yet have any mills or factories to produce cotton goods for export).
