Greenville is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 18,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and home to Mississippi State University. The city is also known for its large cotton fields, plantations, and other agricultural products. The original settlement in what is now Greenville was established by white settlers in 1814 as an outlying plantation on the edge of Natchez District. Growth within the district led to new settlements being established near Greenville proper in 1832 and 1836. The town was named after General Nathaniel Greene who served as a Ulysses S. Grant's cavalry officer during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1870, Greenville became a post office with mail service from Jackson and Yazoo City; it remained so until 1898 when it became part of Memphis metropolitan area. In 1916–17, Greenville annexed parts ofMarshall County including present-day Starkville which had been founded by freedmen in 1865 as a result of Reconstruction efforts following America's Civil War (1861-1865). At that time it had a population of only 2 people per square mile (0.8 km²). During World War II much bus transportation took place through downtown Greenville daily between Memphis and Shreveport; today most bus travel takes place via Highway 601 or US 71 outside of town. Most businesses are open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm EST while Saturday hours vary depending on production or holiday activity; many small businesses close early during weekdays for lunchtime workers only days before major events such as state fairs or Christmas markets take place.........................................................................

Greenville is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 27,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenville was James Denton in 1824. James Denton and his family were followers of Isaac Newton who founded Clarksdale, Alabama in 1795. After moving to this area he erected a log cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River with help from local Native Americans. In 1825, Greenville became a town under the name of "Island Grove". It had a Post Office from 1826 to 1830 and was renamed "Marshall" in 1839 by Major General Phillip Sheridan as part of his campaign against Indian resistance to white settlement east of the Mississippi River. In 1840, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered all Indian nations be assembled at Fort Moultrie (now Savannah) for negotiations over their respective rights as American citizens within their respective reservations. The military expedition that resulted led to Greenville's incorporation into Marshall County on July 8th, 1840 (). At its incorporation it had a population of 3 whites and 25 Indians living among its original settlers- most notably Daniel Boone who had been granted lands adjacent to present day downtown Greenville by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II as part of Creek Nation Settlement Program . As an incorporated city it enjoyed many privileges not available to unincorporated county towns such as easier access to water supplies and surroundings which made farming more profitable than before; however these benefits did not last long due to changes in government policy towards Indian tribes beginning around 1865 which favored white settlement over native titles . By 1870 Marshall County contained only a small number of black residents while almost all white residents lived within 5 miles (8 km)of Marshalltown or Jackson proper . One reason for this trend may have been related to land acquisition: starting around 1865 new counties were formed out west – including Jackson – resulting in more easily accessible grazing land for livestock while also giving rise to settlements near rivers that could be used for transportation and trade
Greenville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,498 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by General John Coffee and named for him. Greenville became a city in 1909.
