The first firearms in Greenville were pistols, shotguns and rifles. The town was founded by white men from Alabama in 1819 as a trading post on the Yazoo River. In 1830, Greenville became an incorporated city and soon began to specialize in agriculture. Firearms became an important part of the town's economy, and gunslingers such as Buffalo Bill traveled to Greenville to sell their handguns and hunting supplies. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his headquarters from Richmond, Virginia to Greensboro, North Carolina. A group of Confederate officers and gentlemen decided to move into the town too, and they started to buy weapons. Soon enough there were so many firearms dealers that it became difficult for people living in Greensboro to get their hands on new arms. This led to a gunrace between the two cities, where gunslingers could purchase weaponry at lightning speeds. In 1868, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Greensboro with his army for the battle of Vicksburg. He ordered all firearms shops in the city closed down because he believed that Union forces would be more effective using rifles instead of pistols. This event is often cited as the start of gun control laws in America. Gun control laws didn't really take off until after World War II when mass shootings like Sandy Hook made headlines across the country. After that time Gun Control Amendment Act was passed into law which regulated what type of firearms could be possessed by certain individuals (see NFA).
Greenville, Mississippi is a city in the state of Mississippi. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County. Greenville is located on the Yazoo River, about 20 miles southeast of Jackson and 40 miles northwest of Memphis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The Yazoo River forms most of Greenville's eastern border and flows through town from east to west. The river also borders five other counties: Hardin, Jefferson, Griggs, Quitman, and Marshall. As a result of its location on an alluvial flatland surrounded by mountains on three sides and by navigable rivers on one side for many miles, Greenville has been known for its fertile soil since early times. The first European settlers in what would become Greenville arrived in 1795 with Major John Smith as part of his survey team working upriver from Natchez following Ulysses S. Grant's march across Tennessee into Alabama that year during the American Civil War

Greenville, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Hinds County. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Greenville was founded on December 20, 1811 by Captain James Aiken as a trading post on an island in the Yazoo River just southeast of modern-day Jackson. The first European to set foot in what is now Greenville was François Antoine de La Salle on October 3, 1763 while exploring present-day Mobile Bayou looking for a route to New Orleans through Louisiana's Cajun region. The town gradually grew up around its military post and booming cotton trade during the antebellum era; it prospered until the American Civil War when it was heavily damaged by Union forces and lost much of its wealth and population. After Reconstruction, Greenville regained some prosperity as a manufacturing center but has since lost much of its historic charm and significance due to interstate highway development across central Mississippi Valley (see "Interstate Highway Development" below). Today, Greenville remains an important cultural and economic center for Hinds County with many museums and businesses located there; however, it has also been experiencing rapid growth in recent years due to new commercial areas developed near Interstate 265/I-10 outside the city limits (see "Interstate Highway Development" below). With access to many education opportunities throughout Hinds County thanks to Hinds Community College System and various universities within easy reach (such as Rice University), Greenville remains one of America's most vibrant cities - both culturally and economically - making it an excellent place to live, work or visit while visiting Mississippi itself!
Greenville was chartered in 1814 and named for General James Green, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River, and by 1836 it had reached its peak population of around 100 people. However, during the 1840s cotton farming became more important in Greenville's economy, and the town began to decline. By 1860, it had shrunk to a few hundred people. In 1865, Union General Robert E. Lee asked for help defending Mobile Bay from Confederate forces, and Greenville joined forces with other cities to form the Northeast Alabama Defense Committee. This helped save Mobile from destruction, and by 1870 Greenville had regained some of its former prosperity. In 1881, Hurricane Andrew caused significant damage to parts of Jacksonville and New Orleans, but Greenville avoided any major damage. In 1896–97 coalmining became important in Greenville's economy again; however, this industry declined after World War II. Since then, tobacco has been the town's mainstay export (see Tobacco history).
