The first European to visit Greenville was Capt. Nicholas Bradstreet on November 3, 1795 while exploring the Yazoo Delta region for a fur trading expedition led by General James Wilkinson. He named it after his estates in England - Hampton Court and Greenwich Park were two of his properties. Greenville's earliest settlers came from Yorkshire County in northern England during the 18th century. They arrived as indentured servants on large plantations owned by wealthy cotton planters in what is now southeastern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama. Many of these immigrants settled around Log Cabin Creek where they built white cabin homes which still stand today. There are several slave churches located around Log Cabin Creek that are also visible from Interstate 20 just south of town limits

The history of Greenville dates back to 1827 when two British boys, John Brown and James Hogg, were captured by General Andrew Jackson while trying to cross over into Tennessee on horseback. They were brought before Jackson and given a choice: be sold into slavery or die. Brown chose freedom, but Hogg chose death because he thought it would lead to his friends being freed as well. In 1827, Isaac Asbury founded what would become known as Asbury Park with land he had bought from John Brown. In 1851, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided that Greenville would be his next target after learning about Union forces massing near Corinth on Highway 61 south of Memphis metropolitan area for an attack on that night instead turned east towards Tupelo instead resulting in more than 150 killed including most of Ewell's command staff including his flagship USS "Monitor". On July 17th 1861 approximately 2 miles SWGRI (then located at present day Meridian) Union Colonel William Tecumseh Sherman's column came across large stacks of burning cottonwood trees which indicated there must have been troops camped nearby due to these burns! Sherman ordered his cavalry troopers under Major Samuel Pinchot to investigate this unusual sight so they discovered there were no enemy troops around hereabouts! A second stack up ahead indicated some larger encampment consisting predominately male slaves who had recently arrived from Arkansas who were being unloaded onto local trains headed for market at Vicksburg; again all indications indicate these people did not pose any military threat whatsoever! These events led directly to Sherman's march through central Mississippi onJuly 24th 1861 achieving total victory over Confederate forces resulting in over 600 Confederate soldier dead along with 50000+ tons(of cotton) burnt!!!

In 1865, Greenville was annexed into Confederate Mississippi Territory after the Battle of Vicksburg. In 1871, when Mississippi became a state, Greenville became its capital.
