Greenville, Mississippi is a small town located in Gulf County, Mississippi. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gulf County. The name "Greenville" comes from "Gulf View", which was an overlook on the Gulf of Mexico that used to be part of old Greenville. The first settlement in what is now Gulf County was made by African Americans who came to work on plantations near Mobile Bay in 1814. In 1839, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Greenville and founded the Confederate Army's artillery academy there. The town became known as "The Arsenal of Democracy." In 1871, Greenville became a state capital when it was chosen as the site for Mississippi's new state government after a referendum vote. The capital changed again in 1907 when it became the capital of Delta State following a referendum vote by its citizens. Delta State was merged with Alabama in 1959 and greenVILLE reverted back to its original status as the county seat of Gulf County upon that state's creation. According to the 2010 US Census, Greenville has 2,816 residents; this number includes 1,755 males and 753 females living together unitarily (unincorporated). White people make up 52% of all residents while black people make up 48%. Hispanic or Latino residents account for 4% of all residents. As per 2006 US Census figures released by HUD,[1] Black inhabitants are more likely than any other race group to live below poverty line--68%, compared with 53% for whites and 41% for Hispanics/ Latinos combined. Poverty rates vary greatly across racial lines within each ethnic category: 71% black households were below poverty line according to HUD’s report; however only 49% white households were so afflicted,[2] underscoring how income disparities still persist within UHM communities despite concerted efforts by public agencies concerned about such disparities throughout society at large
