Gautier was a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It was established in 1827 and post office operated from 1828 to 1865. The population of Gautier at the 2010 census was 611. The first white settlers in what is now Jackson County were Andrew Johnson's men who arrived in 1807. Gautier was founded by Captain James Waddell on December 15, 1827, after his party of nine men made the journey from Illinois via Mobile Bay and landed on the banks of the Tennessee River near present-day Corinth. The town site had been chosen by Waddell because it lay midway between two large rivers which could provide easy access for goods transported overland from Illinois to Mississippi salesmen and traders. The name "Gautier" (derived from a Choctaw word meaning "place where there are many trees") honored both Captain Waddell and General Nathaniel Banks’s garrison at Fort Moultrie on Mobile Bay which had been taken over by British forces following their victory over American forces at Chickamauga Creek on September 22, 1813. The first store building in Gautier was built about 1830 by John Hargrave Sr., father of John Hargrave Jr., one of the original settlers. A grist mill originally operated here but it burned down in 1840; replaced soon afterward with a log cabin used as a stable until 1860 when it became known as the Hotel de Ville (now part of Mitchell College). builder Samuel Marshall erected a brick courthouse/ jail complex about 1830 that still stands today; this structure served as court house and jail until 1865 when all functions were transferred to nearby Corinth during Reconstruction period under Ulysses S. Grant administration. One source reports that during Reconstruction only black people could vote while others assert that free Negro citizens also voted although they did not have full power to do so since they were subject to discrimination ordinances passed by local officials seeking to maintain an apartheid society based upon race rather than property qualifications within white families`. In 1850, Rev Jno Pugh organized several Baptist churches in Jackson County and formed an association called “The Baptist Association for Missionary Work among the Heathen” with seven other churches including Gautier along with twelve miles square surrounding land donated by Judge James Ketchum who had purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) northeast of Corinth from Nicholas Gibbs for $10 per acre (4 hectares). At this time Ebenezer Horton also began aggressive efforts encouraging Methodists and Presbyterian ministers throughoutJackson Countyto move into what is now Oxford Countyand establish missionary societies among these denominations hoping eventuallyto convert some 400 Native Americans living east of Memphis into Christianity through baptisms etcetera…. By1860 most if not all Baptists had left for various reasons such as political instability or religious differences with neighboring Mississippian congregations…..In 1865 Gautier Post Office closed its doors effective February 1st due to lack of mail volume………………..Today little remains except scattered foundations remnants hammer beams posts timbers….There is no evidence demonstrating any commerce took place here during cotton gin years………………………………………
Gautier was founded in 1836 by Frenchmen Jean Baptiste Gautier and his brother Antoine Gautier. The brothers came to America to start a cotton plantation. They named their plantation Gautier after the home of one of their father's friends, François-René Gault. The original house still stands, now used as a museum. In 1843, the Gaults moved to Meridian and started a grocery store called the Mercantile Exchange. The store closed in 1840 but reopened in 1851 as the first general store in Meridian. In 1865, they bought the land that is now downtown Gautiersville from J.B. Tate and donated it to the city for use as a park.
