The first settler in what is now Gautier was Rasmus Nielsen, who arrived from Jacobsen's Land (now Denmark) in 1828. In 1830 Ole Gætzold purchased three hundred acres of land from John Auldridge and built a log cabin on it which he named "Gaultiere". From this point forward, Gautier became an important center for slave trade because it lay near points of entry into the Deep South for African slaves. In 1834 Ole Gætzold married Maria Christen Ditlevnsdatter from South Carolina and they moved to Mississippi where he began to operate his plantation with his enslaved workers under the name "Ole & Christen Plantation". In 1840 Maria died after giving birth to their only child, an infant girl named Harriette christened Hester; she would later become known as Aunt Hester or simply Aunt Hesterie to her descendants. In 1841 Ole Gætzold sold all his slaves except two women to Joshua Sweetfield of Mobile for $1,000 each and continued operations as "Ole & Christen Plantation" without any employees other than those owned by him and his wife Maria Cristina Ditlevnsdatter-Gætzold. However, shortly thereafter JoshuaSweetfield ran into financial difficulties which caused him to sell most of his holdings back to Ole Gætzold for just $500 cash on January 15,1842 including all but one woman still employed by him at "Ole & Christen Plantation". In May of that year Ole reopened the plantation with only 10 employees--six men and six women--but within months again lost money when prices of cotton went up 50%. He repeated this pattern throughout the 1840s; however, profits gradually grew as price discounts were given to buyers on inventory changes or when new markets opened up in Europe or Africa where cotton was being produced at lower costs than here in America due to transportation costs alone. Gautier was founded in 1892 by Frenchmen Jean-Baptiste and Claude Gautier as a post office and trading village on the banks of the Pearl River. The name "Gautier" is thought to be derived from an Iroquois word meaning "place where the water flows." In 1903, Gautier became one of thirty towns in Mississippi granted city status. The first settler in Gautier was Jean Baptiste Gaultiers, who arrived in 1892 with his family. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Pearl River and began trading goods with Native Americans. By 1904, there were six residents living in Gautiere; three men and three women. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources: oil wells near present-day Joplin and cotton fields around Clarksville. In 1914, Saint John's Episcopal Church was dedicated adjacent to what is now the old high school building; it served as church for many years until it burned down in 1966. During World War II (1939-1945), Gautierre prospered as one of several black communities located within easy reach of Bassingbourn Naval Air Station (now nearby Kingsport). The community furnished food for troops stationed there during World War II; some estimates place the value of goods furnished at $225 million per year! Afterward, many families left Gautierre for better opportunities elsewhere in Mississippi or Louisiana after Reconstruction ended.
