There have been rifles in Gautier, Mississippi for over a century. The first rifle to be built in the town was an 1836 shotgun called the “Piney Woods Rifle.” Gautier’s rifle stock history began with the development of the musket in 1775. In 1802, Captain John Sibley of Company F, First US Volunteer Infantry, purchased a Winchester Model 1854 from Nicholas Bros., a gunsmith in Great Britain. The Winchester Model 1851 became most popular among American soldiers during the Mexican-American War because it fired a projectiles that were two and one-half times as large as other muzzle loading firearms and could penetrate enemy armor at up to seventy-five yards ( sixty meters). After the war ended, Commander Sibley donated his new rifle to Gautier Municipal Police Department upon his retirement from military service. The police department continued to use this model of rifle until 1893 when they replaced it with an older but still sound weapon called the National Guard’s Browning A2 Rifle which is still used by law enforcement today. In 1902, Captain John Sibley's grandson also bought a Winchester Model 1854 from Nicholas Bros., providing another source of rifles for local militias during World War I . This weapon saw action on many fronts including trench warfare against Nazi Germany and later in compliance with United States regulations during World War II . The last rifles manufactured by Nicholas Bros., Incorporated were those made under license by Colt firearms Corporation for use by Louisiana State Troopers during WWII . An interesting note about these weapons is that all except for one (the 1903 Winchester) were produced without any type of stocks or handguards; instead each firearm was fitted with a simple breech block that opened via hammer and side ejector provisions found on early U.S. shotguns

The name change came about because of the discovery of oil near Gautier by J.B.
