In remembrance of this visit, Gautier placed a statuette of Lafayette at its courthouse. In 1870s Gautier became known for its cotton production; during that time it was one of the largest cotton producer cities in America. After World War II it experienced declined economic conditions and lost its importance as a manufacturing center; however today it still retains some historic buildings and remains an important community for rural residents looking for access to education and health services.

Gautier, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. It was founded in 1858 by Frenchman Pierre Gautier and his family. Gautier is known for its cotton plantations and the manufacturing industry that has grown up around them. The town was hit hard by the 2007-2009 Great Recession, and has seen some renovation efforts over the past few years to try to make it more competitive. The first settler in Gautier was Pierre Gautier himself. He arrived in 1858 from Normandy, France with his wife and two children. The couple built a cabin on what is now known as property north of town. Over time, other pioneer families followed suit: Jean Baptiste Lachance bought land about mile east of present day Gautier in 1860; Antoine Lafitte purchased land south of town in 1862; and Auguste Chouteau acquired land west of town in 1865. By 1870, there were twelve dwellings in Gautier proper and thirty homes scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. Gaudet's store opened its doors on Main Street near where it still stands today on November 3rd, 1871. At that time, it was one of only two stores open within five miles of Jackson County’s center (the other being Jardin’s Market). The store specialized primarily In general merchandise such as groceries, lumber, flour etc., but also sold Confederate soldier’s uniforms (soldiers who had sided with the Confederacy during the American Civil War). It closed its doors for good circa 1916 after many years of operation under various names including “Jardin” & Co., Poultry Store No 2 (later renamed Spring Mills), Hardware Store No 1 (later renamed Eastern Mercantile), Railroad Warehouse No 2 (now called Old Highway 7 Business Center) before finally becoming just simply "Gaudet's" again beginning December 10th 1959 until its closure again effective February 8th 1974 which coincided with heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Hattie In early 1861 when white supremacists began burning all black churches across America following secession from the United States this led to boycotts against white owned businesses throughout Mississippi cotton counties across state lines however no formal boycott laws were passed until after Reconstruction ended White supremacy continued into much later periods during Jim Crow times which lasted until African Americans gained full citizenship rights at local level starting with passage of non-discrimination ordinances statewide ca1964
