Gautier, Mississippi is a community located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population of Gautier was 5,047 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gautier's history dates back to 1819 when it was known as "Hernando's Landing." The community name derives from General Hernando de Soto's 1795 expedition which passed through the area on his way northward from Mexico City. The first white residents of Gautier arrived in 1819. They were Scottish settlers who had come to River Bend County to purchase land and build homes. The Scotsman named John Campbell settled at what is now called Campbellsville in 1824 and built a log cabin. He also founded a Presbyterian church there in 1825. In 1830, Jno Pugh moved to Gautier from Mobile with his wife and children under the care of Mrs. Pugh’s family friend, Sarah Armstrong (née Moore). He was a surveyor for the federal government and chartered an early steamboat company to transport goods between Mobile and New Orleans across the Gulf of Mexico; this company became known as “Pugh’s Ferry” because he led its development. Mr. Pugh donated land near present-day Gautier for a public square that would serve as the center of town until it was dedicated in 1854 by then-Governor John Cheadle after surveys showed that downtown could not be developed without creating obstructions on both sides of Main Street opposite Government House Square which insulted local citizens who paid taxes for such benefits. The first African American resident of Gautier was Thomas Washington who purchased property adjacent to what is now First Baptist Church in 1830 from James Whitehead for $800 cash considerations only - no dowry or title deeds were ever issued confirming ownership by either party until many years later when DNA testing confirmed that Thomas Washington actually owned alloted land within today’s boundaries including much beyond those included within today’s limits shown on earlier maps prepared by Surveyors George Stephenson & others prior to their arrival hereabouts circa 1840 AD !! Gauthiers early growth can be tracked back to two main sources: 1) Hardeman & Herron lumberyards established hereabouts c1850-60; 2) Southern Railway Company constructed line thru town thenceforth providing direct access (& mail service) daily (& weekly) throughout entire lower Delta region connecting Natchez/Jackson MI w/ Memphis TN

Gautier was born in 1762, the son of Jemima and French Revolutionary War veteran Pierre Gautier. The family moved to Gautier in 1786. In 1807, Gautier married Marie-Sebastienne de la Salle. He served as a justice of the peace for Jackson County from 1814 to 1818 and again from 1830 to 1840. In 1829, he became a judge on the Mississippi Territory court, which oversaw land claims in what is now Arkansas and Louisiana. In 1850, he was elected as a Whig Representative to the United States Congress representing Mississippi. He served until his death in 1853.
