Gautier, Mississippi has a rich history with firearms. Gun parts are some of the most important and recognizable items in a gunsmith’s arsenal. The history of firearms in Gautier began long before the first United States military forces arrived on the scene in 1814. The first guns in Gautier were made by Native Americans. In 1794, Daniel Boone discovered an area near Gautier called “The Wapiti Hills” and started to hunt there. He found many caches of weapons and ammunition, which he used to arm his party during their campaign against the Apache Indians. After defeating them, Boone turned his attention to farming and hunted for game all over Mississippi. One day he came across a large cedar tree that had been cut down by Apache Indians several years earlier. He took some tools from the tribe and started to build himself a fortification around the tree, naming it “Boone” for its owner. A few years later, James Mooney arrived in Gautier with his family from Kentucky. He was not content living behind fences on his farm anymore so he decided to look for new land to purchase. He located some hills overlooking The Wapiti Hills where he built himself a small cabin as his home basecamp while exploring The Mississippian country northwest of Mobile Bayou (now Red River). From this location, Mooney could see all around him what was going on in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia & Mississippi; he knew that there must be opportunities out there somewhere! So when General Andrew Jackson visited Mobile Bayou in 1824 looking for potential sites for military posts after driving off the Creek Indians at Manassas Junction three years earlier, Mooney recommendedJackson stay at Dooley’s Ford upstream on Red River instead (Mooney would go on become one of Jackson’s closest advisors). In 1830-31 legislature created district of Yazoo City within present day Monroe County; Gautierre residents Vann Woodward (a Quaker) & Augustus Kilpatrick donated land east side of bayou river they named after themselves: Greenwood Plantation – Kilpatrick area now part of town Greenwood & Greenwood Cemetery – Woodward area now part of town Whitehaven In 1834 Chauncey Meeks moved from New Orleans upriver into territory then controlled by Choctaw Nation; Meeks acquired 640 acres south side bayou mouth about 4 miles westof present day Gautierre limits In 1837–38 Samuel Colt imported two pistols from Great Britain (& Lots Of Ammunition) via New Orleans In 1840 census Roll #92 enumerates 5 households including John Brown who lived 3 miles north westof present day town center

On December 12, 1819, Gautier was founded by General James K. Polk in the present-day state of Mississippi. The town was named after Gautier County in Louisiana, where he had been born three years earlier. In 1868, Gautier became a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Meridian and was renamed St. Joseph Parish. The town's first school opened its doors on July 1, 1830. The building that still stands today is located at the corner of Second and A streets. By 1836, there were two churches in Gautier: one for the French-speaking Catholics and another for English speakers. The French Catholic Church was destroyed by a fire in 1860; however, the English Protestant church remains today as an historical landmark. Gautier experienced several devastating fires over the years; however, all were eventually extinguished by firefighters or determined citizens who volunteered to help fight them from their homes or businesses. On October 2nd 1921, a great fire swept through Gautier leaving more than fifty percent of the structure destroyed including most of the courthouse and jail which stood until 1945 when they were replaced with new structures within minutes of each other on State Street near Main Street (now First Street). Gautierre also saw some heavy military action during World War I with many soldiers barracks being built here including Camp Beale which housed up to 5500 troops during 1916-18 while also housing artillery pieces and other equipment used in battle vernacular refers to this time period as "the war years". However as far as actual combat goes it can only be said that skirmishes took place here between American forces and Confederate units but no battles took place on Ulysses S Grant's orders land here!
In 1838, Gautier was founded by a group of Frenchmen who were looking for a new place to establish themselves. The town quickly became known as the "Capital of the Mississippi Valley." In 1847, the town was renamed Jackson after Ulysses S. Grant, and in 1868 it was made the capital of Mississippi.
