Gautier, Mississippi is a small town in central Mississippi. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town began as a small trading post on the banks of the Pearl River, about three miles from present-day Gautier. In 1825, John Davenport built his first post here and named it Gautier after his father-in-law, General James Gautier. In 1868, Gautier became an official U.S. Post Office and soon developed into a busy center for cotton Merchants and planters who grew crops and raised livestock in the area. In 1902, Gautiere's school board voted to build a new school district which would include all of present day Jackson County; however, due to financial constraints unable to finance the project alone (the county had no general fund), the school board decided to borrow money from local bankers in order to complete construction of the new school building which opened its doors on September 9th 1906. The $845 cost of this facility was paid for by taxes levied on individual landowners within Jackson County who contributed an amount equal to their assessed value of land within that year; these same landowners continue to contribute property taxes today according as part of Jackson County's Municipal Court system towards continuing maintenance/ improvement efforts within their own boundaries including but not limited to: roads, bridges etc... Today's community is located on bluffs above Interstate 20 extending for over four miles along both sides of Pearl River until just shy of its confluence with US 21 (a few hundred yards west of present day downtown). Shortly following completion of I-20 expansion projects in early 2020 resulting in increased traffic congestion around downtownJacksonville caused then Mayor Andrew Gillum during his first StateofCity Address specifically 'to address issues affecting rural areas east side and south'of I-20 near downtownJacksonville adding "Gaudreau Road", subsequently renamed “Mississippi Highway 401” touches down right next door street fronting 4108 Bluff Rd., home since 1886 & ancestral homebuildings established pre 1840s by families now majority white evangelical Christian

Gautier was founded in 1814 by Captain John Gautier and his wife, Fannie. The town became a thriving center for cotton plantations and shipping. By 1840, the population had reached 4,000 people. The Gautiers were fixtures in local politics and the community prospered until the American Civil War destroyed their plantation empire. In 1865, Gautier was sacked by Union soldiers during the Battle of Corinth and its residents fled to Mobile Alabama. In 1889, Gautier's last resident died at age 90 years old.
