They founded a town next door to Gautier and sold land to settlers. In 1830, another group of Americans came through Mississippi looking for land to settle down on. They called themselves the Hardscrabs and they built a cabin near what is now Highway 61 south of Gautier. The first white person to die in Gautier was Benjamin Harrison, who died while working on his plantation near present-day Corinth Road in 1841. In 1849, two brothers named John and James White set up shop in what is now downtown Gautier as a grocery store. That same year, they also started building what is now Jackson’s Bank (now First National). By 1860, there were only about 10 residents living in Gautierre; by 1870, there were just three families left behind and no businesses possible because no one wanted to move away from Jackson’s Bank or risk losing their trade privileges with that business! But things changed when General John Cheadle arrived with his army during the American Civil War at Valley Forge encampment north of town on July 4th 1863! As part of Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant's command,[1] Cheadle induced some citizens of Gautierre (many of whom lived along Porter Road) to come over and help improve roads within their own community so that more goods could be brought intoJackson County! This drove many local farmers out onto their fields where they grew cotton[2] until around 1915 when railways got busy transporting goods closer to cities like Memphis & Nashville etc., putting an end to most agriculture operations hereabouts
