Gautier, Mississippi is a small town located in Harrison County, Mississippi. The population was 468 at the 2000 census. Gautier is named for Jean-Baptiste Girard (1759-1837), a French general who fought in the American Revolution and later served as President of Louisiana. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Harrison County were French fur traders and missionaries, such as Father Jacques Marquette and Father Pierre Laclède, in the early 17th century. By 1800, Gautiers had become a trading post on the Yazoo River. It was here that General James Kilearnagar established himself as an important figure in 19th century Jackson County politics. In 1807, Kilearnagar married Sarah Cooks, daughter of Andrew Cook of Pearl River Township. They had two children: John and Sarah Ann Kilearnagar. Gautier's economic development began when cotton became available for plantations near Gulfport in 1819. By 1825, about 100 families were engaged in cotton production; by 1830, this number had increased to 1123 people employed directly or indirectly from Gautier alone in manufacturing goods needed for plantation life – including whiskey bottles which became known as "gaudrons" because they often caught fire when left unattended on stovetops at night! Cotton production declined during the Civil War because so many slaves were taken away to be used on Union Army plantations; however, it restarted after Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865). In 1865 Gautier became the terminus of an Underground Railroad route leading from Jackson County to Meridianye Parish east of Baton Rouge; within five years over 2200 fugitive slaves had reached Gautier!
