Corinth is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The first Europeans to visit Corinth were French traders in 1799. A post office called Corinth was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site was chosen by a committee from local farmers and townspeople on December 12, 1826. The first house built in Corinth was the Fenton House, located on what is now Elm Street. In 1830 an act of Congress designated it as the county seat of Hancock County. In 1837 a courthouse and jail were built; both remain standing today. On May 6, 1838, a tornado destroyed most of Corinth with fatalities estimated at 60%. However, subsequent studies found that only 2% of all homes or businesses were destroyed within one mile (1 kilometer) of the tornado's path – proof that natural disasters are not typically responsible for large numbers of injuries or fatalities during this time period. In 1865 Confederate General Braxton Bragg made his headquarters here before retreating to Chattanooga across the Tennessee River into Alabama following Union successes at Perryville and Lookout Mountain. After Bragg's retreat, much activity took place near Corinth instead: major battles were fought nearby such as Battle of Hatchie Bridge (1865), Second Battle of Nashville (1865), First Battle of Bulloch Creek (1866), Third Battle of Franklin (1868), Siege Of Atlanta(1871-5)), Fourth siege Of Mobile Bay(1875)), andBattle At Big Tupelo(1913).During these events several roads leading into and out of Corinth became famous including State Road No 1 which still leads through town today

In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most white Mississippians chose to leave their homes and go into exile in other parts of America. During World War I, many black soldiers from Corinth enlisted in the military because they were fearful that they would not be allowed back home if war started again like it had during the Civil War. After World War I ended, many black soldiers returned to their homes but some still stayed in Corinth because they wanted to continue their education or work on local farms or businesses. Since then, much progress has been made for both the community and individuals within it such as increased racial diversity; increase access to quality education; development of new industries; increased healthcare options; etc., all while maintaining strong African American cultural heritage
The town of Corinth, Mississippi was founded by the Mississippians in 1833. It became a manufacturing center for cotton and other crops. The city experienced significant growth during the 20th century, with its economy becoming increasingly dependent on outside sources of income. Corinth is now a small, Historic Districts-listed community that retains much of its original character.
