C Corinth, Mississippi, is a small town in Harrison County, Mississippi. The population was 1,845 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Corinth were the Houma Nation. They had been there for centuries before that. The town was named for the Corinthian column found near by on a plantation owned by General Andrew Johnson in 1824. (Johnson was impeached and later died in 1865.) The cotton industry began to grow in Corinth around 1866. The plantations that grew cotton were often quite large, with up to fifty thousand acres of land cultivated. This made it difficult for small farmers to compete with these larger plantations and allowed Cotton States such as Mississippi and Alabama to become very prosperous indeed. However, by 1900 only 5% of the workforce in Corinth consisted of farmers while 95% consisted of workers who did not own any land or businesses; this trend continued until after World War II when farming became more important again due to an increase in demand for goods produced domestically). During most of its history, Corinth has been known as a stop on the Underground Railroad because so many escaped slaves brought their children here during times of crisis or persecution back home. In 1865 one man—John Brown—organized a raid on some southern mills which left ninety-six people dead and two hundred wounded; this event helped start the American Civil War and eventually led to abolitionism across America (this story is told variously). Polk to build a canal through Tennessee and Mississippi so that goods could be shipped more quickly from those states into British America. The canal was completed in 1845 but did not have much impact on local economy because goods still traveled via rivers or canals rather than roads or railroads. Eventually, electricity became available at some points along the canal so goods could be transported by car instead of being transported downriver like before. This change led to increased traffic on the road system which caused prices for goods to increase which hurt local businesses especially since they were not able to make heavy profits without increased sales elsewhere
The town of Corinth, Mississippi was founded in 1855 by white settlers. The town rapidly grew and reached a population of over 10,000 by 1860. However, the town's growth stopped after the Civil War. Corinth was sacked by Union forces in 1865 and its population decreased significantly.
