The community was founded by Methodists in 1881 as an agricultural settlement on land donated by James Bloodgood Sr., who also donated $5,000 toward its construction. In 1914 it became home to the first African American high school in Mississippi when Booker T Washington attended integrated Central High School there before transferring to Jackson State College where he earned his Bacteriology degree in 1915.
