In 1810, General WASHINGTON when he took command of Union troops invading Tennessee surrendered at Murfreesboro after engaging 6 Confederate brigades under General Pemberton without achieving any significant success other than damaging some supplies at Muscle Shoals Dam which Confederate General Robert Ewell destroyed shortly afterwards while pursuing Washington across Alabama Hills National Battlefield Site). This event helped symbolize both Confederate military incompetence during wartime as well as public dissatisfaction with Union rule throughout much ofoutherland following the war effort overall - despite Federal victories in battlefields such as Gettysburg.[1]
