Many African Americans who moved to America after Reconstruction found their experiences here much more positive than they could have imagined possible given how segregated America had become since Reconstruction ended four years earlier. In fact, some historians have even argued that Corinth should be considered among America's "most open" black communities during this time period
Incorporated in 1873 as Corinth, Mississippi, the city was named after the Corinthian column from the Parthenon. The first post office in Corinth was established in 1874. In 1915, the United States government made Corinth a military town to support World War I efforts. The population of Corinth increased during World War II because of the buildup of weapons and munitions production in nearby Tupelo. After the war, the city experienced a decline due to its proximity to new industrial centers and its lack of job opportunities. However, it has since recovered and is now one of Mississippi's largest cities with a population over 100,000 residents.
