Corinth, Mississippi is a small town located in Iuka County, Mississippi. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Meridian-Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter Corinth were French traders and missionaries who began trading in the area in 1795. The town was founded on December 2, 1814 by Methodist preacher and businessman James Swayne with a group of his friends. Swayne named the town after his father-in-law, Corinthus Covington, who had been killed during the Mexican War. The cotton plantations that became prominent in Corinth were founded by planters from Alabama and Tennessee in the early 1800s. By 1860, most of these plantations had been sold to agents representing eastern United States cotton ginners. The Panic of 1837 led to a decline in production at many American crops during the 1840s which caused prices for cotton to increase around the world. This increased competition led to increased job opportunities for African Americans working on white settlers' plantations throughout America during this time period. In addition, new transportation technologies such as railroads made it easier for farmers to sell their crops directly to consumers instead of waiting for shipping crates filled with produce from England or Europe. In 1851, two men from Corinth - John Aiken and Gentry Cox - started an ice cream parlor called "Natchez Park". The parlor quickly became well known throughout Corinth because its ice cream was especially good and affordable compared to other businesses in town at that time. For decades thereafter, Natchez Park served as an important center for socializing and enjoying icy treats among friends across racial lines (usually black people). In 1954, Jens Jensen opened Nelle's Ice Cream Parlors next door which competed successfully against "Natchez Park" until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic troubles。 Aiken Avenue forms much of downtown Corinth today while Gentry Cox Boulevard continues southward forming part of US 82/5 highway between Meridian and Jackson metropolitan areas
In 1821, the United States acquired Corinth, Mississippi from Spain. The town was founded in 1795 by Captain John Stroud and his family as a trading post on an old Indian trail connecting Mobile and Pensacola. The first store in Corinth was opened in 1814 by Capt. David Ralls. In 1830, the town had a population of 350 people and was named for the ancient city of Corinth in Greece. The first school in Corinth was built in 1833 and served grades one through twelve. In 1835, the town became a state seat of Mississippi after it was combined with Jackson to become the new state of Mississippi. By 1860, Corinth had a population of 3,000 people and was the largest city within Mississippi. The city's commercial district attracted traders from all over the country during Reconstruction period (1865-1920). During World War II, Corinth served as an important military base for both American forces and Japanese troops stationed in southern Iraq.
