The town of Corinth, Mississippi was founded in 1819 by the Mayflower Compact settlers. The name is derived from a phrase meaning "city on the bluff." Corinth became an important cotton center during the antebellum period because of its location at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1847, it was made a state capital and remained so until 1957. The city has experienced various boom-and-bust cycles since its heyday, but it has always been an important cultural and economic center in Mississippi. The earliest inhabitants of Corinth were Native American people who lived along the riverbanks near present-day Corinth. They hunted game and gathered seafood. By 1800, they had built small villages along the riverbank and supplemented their income by cultivating corn, beans, squash, strawberries and other vegetables. From this early stage in history, there is no evidence that either Indian or white individuals engaged in significant trade with one another. In 1819, some Mayflower Compact settlers decided to move westward into what is now Arkansas Territory after experiencing difficulties farming virgin land south of Mobile Bayou. They selected a site for their new town on high ground overlooking the Red River about two miles northeast of present-day Corinth. The original town founders were Captain James White (a member ofCaptain John Smith's first voyage), his wife Rebecca Keyes (née Livingstone) and five others: Samuel Greggs (an attorney from Charleston who had served as justice of peace for St Simons Island Parish), John Rankin (a carpenter from Jackson County), Amos Kendall (an editor for The Mississippian newspaper) and Nicholas Biddle (a farmer from Bethlehem). After several years of construction work and many adventures over difficult terrain including repeated attempts to crossingCatawba Mountain using rafts filled with goods brought downriver by steamboats – all without being able to find any water – they finally completed their beloved community on October 12th 1824 when they measured 6 rods long × 3 rods wide × 1 rod high inside a low mound called Prairie Hillock just east of present day Corinth bridge across Red River which still stands today! There were only about 60 people living within limits drawn around this little village when it was platted; within 10 years most everyone had moved away except for some African Americans who worked as farmhands or servants in local whites' homes! Captain James White died before he could bring his home section upriver so much as erect a fence around it; however his widow Rebecca did manage to build an impressive brick house on what is now North High Street which she named Mrs Price's House after her late husband's sister Julia Price RN(*). Shortly thereafter Captain James' widow sold her share inthe town to Major General Isaac Brock (*) commandant general United States forces stationed at Memphis under General Andrew Jackson (*). Mr Richard Gist (*) later purchased Mrs Price's interestEstate also known as Whitcomb Place adjoining Mrs Price's property making him owner/operator thereof until his death circa 1870 although he never resided there nor did he improve nor operate said place….. Corinth, Mississippi is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,389 at the 2010 census. The name of the original townsite is unknown but it likely was located on the Black River. The first European to visit Corinth wasache in 1796 and he named it for his friend-in-law John Jacob Astor. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson marched through Corinth with his army during the American Revolutionary War and General Philip Schofield conducted a cavalry raid through the community that destroyed several homes and killed two people. In 1830, Folwell Moore founded a cotton plantation in what is now Corinth and this plantation became one of the largest cotton plantations in America. It operated until 1875 when it was bought by J.P. Morgan's company which renamed it Gulf Oil Corporation. When Gulf Oil Corporation merged with Texaco Incorporated in 1986, much of Corinth's commercial infrastructure including its main shopping center (The mall) were acquired by Texaco for use as part of its corporate headquarters complex known as THE CENTER at Texaco Park (now known as ExxonMobil). In 2004, THE CENTER was purchased by Kroger who moved their corporate headquarters from Charlotte to Memphis before eventually moving back to Corinth where they continue to operate their store today within THE CENTER complex. Today, Corinth retains many of its historic buildings including its courthouse which remains open daily except Saturday for general business purposes; its post office; its banks - First National Bank & Trust Company (founded 1865), Citizens National Bank & Trust Company (1887), United States Savings Bank (1910), Hammonds Department Store -established 1912-13-, Wilson Hardware & News stand - established 1916-, Joplin Furniture & Home Improvement Center -established 1984-. Additionally, numerous local businesses have been consolidated intoTHE CENTER complex such as The Gilded Cage Theatre Company performing plays there since 1977including recent renovations that include new seating throughout the theater auditorium and updated sound/lighting systems; an ice rink concessionaire called D'Angelo's Ice Rink; a mini golf course inside THE CENTER complex called Legends Golf Club; three restaurants - Olive Garden Pizza Place(opened 1965), Chili’s Grilleteria(opened 1967), White Castle Cafe(opened 1988)), plus several smaller stores are also located within THE CENTER complex such as Hobby Lobby & Craftsman Tools on one side of the mall while Dick's Sporting Goods is located on the other side across from Macy's department store containing both an Outlet Store section and a Men's Clothing section along with more than half dozen convenience stores including Mrs Winfrey's Bakery & Grocery on one side while BP Gas stations are located on either side of Interstate 10 exit 137 off I-10 near Gates Mall providing access to Highway 61 which provides access to both Chattanooga metropolitan area and Jackson metropolitan area
