Corinth is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Corinth begins with French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1799 and named it for Charles-Jacques de Corinth, an officer in the French army during the Seven Years' War. In 1836, when Mississippi became a state, Corinth was chosen as its capital by Congress because of its strategic location near Mobile and Jackson on the Gulf Coast. By 1840, however, Charleston had become the state capital and Corinth lost its status as a metropolis. In 1843–44 Governor John C. Calhoun ordered surveyors to plat out new towns throughout present-day Marshall County so that white farmers could settle there and compete against freedmen in cotton land sales. The first town platted in what is now Corinth was called "New Salem." New Salem was abandoned after only two years because no cotton crops were grown there; however, other early settlements included "Pine Street," "Mosesville," "First National Bank," and "Albany" (now part of downtown). During Reconstruction period (1865–1877), Corinth experienced rapid growth as black men worked on local farmssteads or joined military units fighting for Ulysses S. Grant's American Civil War efforts against Confederate forces south of the river. Steel production began in nearby Port Gibson soon after Meridian became an industrial center following passage of federal Prohibition laws in 1919; steel mills would dominate Morrison Valley until they closed around 1970%. African Americans also played major roles in various aspects of social life including education and work service during this time period; some went on to achieve disproportionate success both inside and outside government institutions like business management or law enforcement careers while others struggled unsuccessfully to attain parity with whites within their own communities through economic opportunities or political power pursuits.
