In 1854, Columbus was founded by white men on the Mississippi River. The town quickly became a center for cotton trade and agricultural production. In 1865, the Union Army burned Columbus to the ground in order to free slaves. The town never recovered and died within a few years of its establishment. But Columbus’s loss did not mean its loss of history. In 1892, an American inventor named George Stephenson invented the first successful electric streetlight in America. By 1896, there were more than 1,500 streetlights in America using Stephenson's invention – making Columbus one of the most prominent lights on North American streets. While Columbus' role as a commercial and cultural center has been largely forgotten over time, its contributions to light up North American streets remain highly appreciated. Today,Columbus is home to several museums that focus on local history and culture; as well as numerous restaurants and nightlife options which offer tours of some of its earliest businesses.

There is no one person who has made such a significant impact on the history of Columbus, Mississippi, as Christopher Columbus. The explorer and navigator was responsible for bringing Christianity to the Mississippi Delta in 1492, and his discoveries have helped shape the region's culture and identity. He is also credited with laying the groundwork for what would become the United States of America. Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. When he was just 16 years old, he set sail from Venice with three friends to find new land – this was to be his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. He reached Newfoundland in May of 1485 and then sailed southward until he reached Florida on October 12th of that year. After exploring this area for several months, he decided it wasn't worth continuing his journey further south and returned home via Gibraltar on November 6th of that year. After Christopher Columbus' return home, there were many questions about what he had found and whether or not he had been successful in reaching India or China. This led to European exploration and colonization of much of North America – including parts of what is now Mississippi. In 1506, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico City with plans to explore South America as well as gain riches from its resources. However, when Cortés met Columbus at landfall on Texas Island (now Key West) on December 8th of that year, he realized that this same man who had earlier claimed so much land for Spain could also show him how to reach Japan by sailing eastward along the Lesser Antilles chain whileAvoiding Cuba! This event marked an important shift in Hispanic American cultural practices; instead of seeing routes through Central America or South America being discovered by Europeans instead through discovery by native peoples like Chukchansi Indians living near present day Guatemala City- Portobelo (present day Panama), Cortees chose insteadto cross over into Americas using a land route! The resulting trade expansion changed Mexican society forever- opening up new markets for goods manufactured by Europeans while also introducing contacts between different cultures which would lead eventuallyto interracial integration during Reconstruction era decades later!

Columbus, Mississippi is the small town located in Hinds County, Mississippi that was founded by American Revolutionary War hero and explorer Christopher Columbus on November 12, 1814. The town was named after the Italian explorer who first sighted America while sailing on his flagship, the Santa Fe. After landing in what is now Columbus, Mississippi on July 14th of that year, he set out to explore this new land. He quickly realized that this area was different than anything he had ever seen before- it had a river running through it and people living here! This intrigued him so much that he decided to stay and explore further. In 1815, Columbus discovered an area of land known as the "West Florida" region which would soon become part of Mississippi. After some more exploring and negotiation with Native Americans here in Ohio County (now Hinds County), he finally acquired all of what is now Hinds County from them on October 25th of that year- making Columbus one of the most successful American settlements ever made! Here he began construction on what would become known as his home- The Trinity House. It was built primarily for himself but also served as a trading post for various Indian groups here in America. The following year saw another success for Columbus when he managed to purchase 4 square miles (10 km2) of land north of present day Columbus from a group of Creek Indians- giving him access to alligator hunting grounds! In 1816, after 10 years hard work and many adventures including being captured by Cherokee Indians and spending time among them at their campgrounds near New Orleans (then called Spanish Fort), Columbus finally became sole owner/administrator/director/founder/presidente de facto governing body de facto governing body de facto governing body de facto governing body etc.,of what we now know as Mississippi! Upon becoming its own country (!), it adopted its own flag (the rediscovery flag common among British colonies). So proud were these days at last for Christopher Columbus III!!! Alas however things didn't go quite according to plan... It's been said that during his lifetime there were only about 20 people living in or around modern day Columbus proper- fewer even than today!! And although development has come quite a ways since then, no serious attempts have been made at increasing population levels here despite advances in communication technology etc… And needless to say none are likely coming any time soon either!!! Notwithstanding this sad reality however; our little town continues slightly thriving thanks largely to its namesake’s legacy within our community & culture
