The soft gun case history in Columbus, Mississippi started with the purchase of a Winchester Model 1894 rifle by Roy C. Smith on October 30, 1922. The rifle was new and had never been fired. It was stored in a closet at home until it was needed for defense during the 1923 murder of his wife and her paramour, local farmer James Hinton. The Smith family used this rifle to kill Hinton as he slept in his bed. The rifle was later given to their son Roy Jr., who kept it until it was sold to Bill Nye on November 10, 1954. Nye used the rifle to shoot down an American Airlines plane over Europe that morning.
Columbus, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area and is located just east of the Memphis metropolitan area on Interstate 5. The town was founded in 1892 by Rear Admiral John C. Cook as a retirement community for officers of the U.S. Navy who had retired from service in Cuba and other parts of Latin America during the Spanish-American War (1898). After one year, Cook annexed what were then Cherokee County to make Columbus larger. The name derives from an early settler's observation that "the best place for a new town to be built" in nearby Choctaw Township was on land now occupied by Columbus High School; also, "it seemed appropriate that [the] first 'town' should be named after George Washington". In 1903, Cook donated 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land to the school board which became Columbus Landing Airport; it remains today one of Hinds County's most important commercial areas with several large retailers and restaurants including JCPenney and Macy's Department Store. In 1910–11 Hickory Creek Electric Cooperative began operations in Columbus; it became a municipally owned cooperative with members across Hinds County before being sold to GulfSouth Railroad LLC in 1997. Today GulfSouth runs passenger trains into Hattiesburg daily via two tracks crossing over I-5 near downtown Harrisonburg and operates freight trains through their own line connecting Columbus Landing Airport with Marinelli Plantation near Biloxi Bayou ELECTRICITY WAS FIRST BEGAN OPERATING IN COLUMBUS IN 1910 BY HICKORY CREEK ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE UNDER THE NAME OF GULF SOUTH RAILROAD LLC.; IT BECAME A MUNICIPAL OWNED COMPANY WITH MEMBERS FROM ALL OF HINDS COUNTY BEFORE BEING SOLD TO GULF SOUTH RAILROAD LLC., ENGLAND’S LARGEST TRANSPORTATION COMPANY IN 1997

The company that manufactured the soft case for the Glock pistols and revolvers, began making cases in the early 1960s. The first Soft Gun Cases were made of hard plastic and had a Screw-On Latch. This design was changed in 1965 to a pushbutton latch that required a small lever to be depressed to open the case. In 1976, an all new style was introduced with an elastic band around each side of the trigger guard that prevented it from falling out when opened.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the new world of America. The land he discovered would become known as Mississippi. The area that is now Mississippi was part of Spanish Louisiana until 1763 when it was ceded to America by France. In 1819, the United States acquired the area from Spain and set off to explore it. After a long journey across North America, they reached Florida in 1846. They then traveled down the Gulf of Mexico and crossed into Texas in 1847 before reaching California in 1848. By 1850, they had completed their journey and founded what would become Columbus, Mississippi on July 4th of that year. This event helped rename Mississippi as the “nation” of America and make it one of the most important states in the Union. The Mississippian culture operated throughout much of this time period and is responsible for many notable features such as mounds, stone tools, arrowsheads, pottery and tombs found throughout the state. Many Mississippians also played an important role in American history including being key figures during the Revolutionary War and contributing to both sides in that conflict. After American independence was achieved in 1776, many Mississippians relocated to Arkansas where they continued developing theirculture until after World War II when white flight began to occur within Jackson County which led to a decline in population overall over several decades despite efforts by officials to revive community spirit through various forms of marketing activity such as golf tournaments and carnivals (Walsh). Since 1990 there has been significant effort put forth by local historians with support from government funding agencies to promote understanding about Mississippi’s history through historical research projects (Foster). These activities have helped bring attention backto some older communities which had been lost or forgotten while also helping preserve some notable sites like Stonehenge which has been open for public visitation since 2001 (Foster). The city of Columbus lost its status as a county seat after 1930, but retains its history as a center for cotton farming and commerce.
