It was one of three major engagements fought during the Corinth Campaign In 1865, parts of Mississippi were reorganized into districts under control of military governors appointed by Ulysses S. Grant . These districts experienced Reconstruction which aimed to end racial discrimination and make white citizens eligible for civil rights measures like voting access and education opportunities.
